Case Study: University of British Columbia (Vancouver, Canada)
UBC’s Zero Waste Action Plan 2030 includes a target to reduce garbage disposal by 50% by 2030, relative to 2019.To support the achievement of this target, UBC Municipal Operations equipped their new garbage truck with a weigh scale to determine kilograms of dumpster waste (and corrugated cardboard) for each pickup. This data is attributed to each dumpster location based on RFID tags, and the system uses geolocation as a backup.The CWA integrates the truck scale data with other data sets including compactor data, and provides a range of analytics and charts tailored to the needs of two departments: Campus + Community Planning and Municipal Operations.
